Susan Anderson
Dr. Anderson obtained her Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Communication Disorders and Audiology respectively from the University of Northern Colorado, and her Doctor of Audiology from Salus University. Before joining the University of Washington she worked as a clinical audiologist in both private practice and medical settings. Since joining the faculty at the University of Washington in 2007 her role in the department has greatly expanded from the time she started. While clinical instruction of graduate students has been a constant, she has also taught didactic courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. For the past seven years she has led the audiology services provided at the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic. So far, her favorite career move has been that of clinical educator. With the closing of the AuD program 2021 she continues to work wth AuD Externs (students in the last year of their training and in full time clinical experience).
Dr. Anderson has served on two statewide organizations for audiologists showing her leadership in the community beyond the University of Washington. She has been a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology since 1991, and is a member of the American Speech-Language Association (ASHA) and the Washington State Academy of Audiology. She has served her profession in various capacities including: secretary for the Washington State Academy of Audiology, board member for the Washington Speech and Hearing Association, Advisor for the UW Student Academy of Audiology chapter, and various committees. She has been active in outreach at the local and international levels. She regularly speaks to the elderly about hearing and hearing loss, and to the community about hearing loss due to exposure to noise and how to wear hearing protection to prevent such losses. She has led a group of audiology students to Guatemala to treat children with hearing loss there as well as to train audio-technicians in that country where access to treatment is extremely limited. She has been a Rec soccer coach and Girl-scout co-leader for kids in her local neighborhood, many times over.
Across her career she has provided diagnostic hearing services, vestibular evaluations, Industrial audiology services, amplification services and related aural rehabilitation to patients across the lifespan. . Her current clinical focus is the diagnosis of hearing loss in adults using behavioral assessments, and the fitting of hearing aids and hearing assistance technology. She leads the services of the Hearing Aid Assistance Program at the Speech & Hearing clinic which provides amplification at a low cost for patients who are in a low income bracket and whom do not qualify for socialized services. .
