The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences offers two Master's degree programs in speech-language pathology in which students learn to use empirically-driven clinical methodologies to understand and treat communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan: the CoreSLP Program and MedSLP Program (Medical Speech-Language Pathology).

The CoreSLP Program is a two-year program that provides students with the depth and breadth of foundational knowledge and skills pertinent to speech-Language pathology. The program also provides opportunities for students to individualize their program of study through elective coursework reflecting their career and/or research interests. The clinical experiences for this program are primarily obtained on the University of Washington campus.

Students completing the CoreSLP program will obtain a Master's of Science degree from the University of Washington and will meet all of the academic requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence granted by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Clinical Preparation

The clinical preparation of our students is completed on the University of Washington campus as well as in community-based facilities and is designed to adhere to the educational guidelines established and required by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

  1. Practicum: a part-time on-campus clinical experience
  2. School Practicum: a part-time public school experience
  3. Pre-Internship: a part-time placement at the public schools
  4. Internship: a full-time, culminating placement at the public schools

CoreSLP students participate in public schools placement both at the beginning and toward the end of their program.  They attend a school practicum in Fall or Winter of their first year.  Students who select an internship in the public schools attend a part-time pre-internship during Winter quarter of their second year and a full-time internship at the same site the following Spring quarter.
