Eligibility Requirements

Admission to the Speech & Hearing Sciences Postbaccalaureate degree program is competitive and enrollment is currently limited to approximately 25 students each year. Interested applicants are required to provide evidence of the following entrance requirements in order to apply:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree
    • All applicants MUST have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
    • If you have any reason to believe that your institution may not be accredited, or if it is a relatively new university or college, please contact the University of Washington Office of Admissions to verify your degree.
  2. English Language Proficiency (International Students Only)
    • The admissions process for the SPHSC Postbac program follows the University of Washington policies and guidelines for international students.
      • All international students are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores to the UW using UW’s Institution Code (4854). Exams must be taken on or before the February 15th deadline.
      • More detailed information on the English proficiency requirement and exceptions can be found on the UW Office of Admissions website. We encourage international students to carefully read this information before applying.

Additionally, competitive applicants to the SPHSC major should also provide a compelling personal statement which provides evidence of a commitment to entering the major (e.g., prior SPHSC coursework, relevant volunteer, research, or observation experience, relevant personal experience, etc.)

Timing Your Application

The Postbaccalaureate Bachelor of Science program in Speech and Hearing Sciences is completed over five quarters. It begins during Summer quarter (typically the last week in June) and concludes at the end of the following Summer quarter (typically the third week of August). The department only accepts applications to the Postbac program for a Summer quarter start. You may not start this program Autumn quarter so please do not apply to the program if you cannot attend classes starting in June. Application Deadlines

Applications to the Postbac program are due February 15th each year. Applicants access the Postbac application on the UW Office of Admissions website each December. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all required application materials are received by the February 15th deadline.

Decision Notification Timeline

Admission decisions for the SPHSC Postbac program are not conducted on a rolling basis. The Speech and Hearing Sciences selection committee reviews applications after the February 15th deadline and decision letters are sent to applicants in mid-March.
