A Federal act called HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, requires healthcare workers to participate in a privacy-training program to heighten their awareness and responsibility for protected health information. All SPHSC graduate students working in the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic are required to complete an on-line HIPAA training prior to starting their graduate program, in order to understand their responsibilities related to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of an individual’s health information.

The HIPAA training is done online via a secure website and lasts approximately 90 minutes. A UW internet ID is required for this training so please be sure to set this up as soon as possible. The Department’s HIPAA Privacy Officer (Nancy Alarcon / nalarcon@uw.edu) will contact all new students when the training is available. The training is typically available beginning in September and students have 30 days to complete the training. Please do not try to access the training until you receive an email from Ms. Alarcon instructing you to do so.

Once given permission to complete the training, students must review and follow the instructions linkd below. Students must print out 2 copies of their HIPAA Training Certificate; one physical copy is for your personal records. The second copy should be maintained in an electronic format and uploaded to Typhon by September 29, 2017.
